Virus Primer
Question: Why are there viruses?
Short Answer: Money
Long Answer: The reason behind most of the virus, mal-ware and spy-ware infections around today is ultimately money, but underlying that there are a few broad categories that I see regularly.
- Getting your money: These usually have pop ups, pop under, or annoying balloon tips that keep reappearing in the system tray. They sometimes hijack your desktop (warning you that you’ve been infected) and hijack your browser (poisoned search results, hijacked homepage). You hand over your hard earned cash for their (unproven) software (DON’T DO IT!)
- Sending out spam: Hijack of your computer solely to send out spam. You won’t normally see this one unless you look at the network connection and find your upload data is much higher than download data. Depending on you Internet plan you may get a large bill from your ISP (since you exceeded your data allowance and automatically bought more) or you find your Internet access slowed to a crawl (since it ran out on the first day and dropped back to dial up). Spammers get money from the ‘advertisers’.
- Keystroke Logging: Sit quietly in the background monitoring keystrokes e.g bank website, and subsequent user name and password, and then ‘phone home’ with the details. They then raid your account. This is why you should open 'secure' sites from your favorites or directly typing the address in, but NEVER from a link in an email - and ONLY on a trusted computer or device.
There are others, however these are the most common ones I encounter.
Following is a list of known Rogue software packages (aka Viruses); as you can see this list is quite large indicating the scale of the problem. You should also note some well known brand names are listed. This is not necessarily because their software is bad, just that their brand name has been hijacked.
If you are facing one of these rogues, then you should call immediately to arrange a cleanup.
